How to Play Nibbler

Nibbler is a fast-paced maze game where you guide a snake through an enclosed grid. The goal is simple but gets tricky quickly: eat the objects scattered around the board to grow longer while avoiding collisions with walls and your own tail.

You start as a small segment moving through the maze. Each time you consume an object, your snake grows by one block. This growth makes navigation harder because you have less room to maneuver. The game features nine levels of increasing speed, so you must react faster as you progress.

The primary challenge is planning your route ahead. Since the snake cannot reverse direction, you need to anticipate turns before they happen. A single mistake will end the round immediately.

Nibbler was released in 1982 by Rock-Ola and introduced a unique nine-digit scoring system. This allowed players to chase scores up to one billion points. The game has no enemies; the difficulty comes entirely from managing your growing length against the maze walls.

Home ports were later published by Datasoft for systems like the Atari 8-bit and Apple II in 1983. In Japan, Taito handled distribution of the arcade version. The game is often seen as a precursor to later snake games but stands out for its high score potential. You can also try more Arcade games from the same system.
