About This Game

Carnival is a fast-paced fixed shooter that puts you in the center of a chaotic shooting gallery. Your goal is simple: shoot as many targets as possible before they reach you or run out of ammo. However, this game is famous for its tricky mechanics that make it much harder than it looks at first glance.

You control a small crosshair at the bottom of the screen, aiming and firing at various animals like rabbits, ducks, and owls that move across the playfield. The main challenge comes from your ammunition supply. You start with a limited number of bullets, and if you run out, you lose a life. To keep shooting, you must hit specific targets to collect extra bullets or shoot the letters 'BONUS' in order to earn more ammo.

One of the most unique features of Carnival is the presence of bullet-eating ducks. These ducks fly down from the top of the screen toward your position. If they reach the bottom row without being shot, they will eat your remaining bullets. This forces you to balance aggression with caution; you cannot just spray bullets wildly because you might feed the ducks and leave yourself defenseless against the other targets.

Above the animal targets sits a spinning wheel of colored pipes. Hitting these pipes adds points to your score, but there is a reward for precision. If you hit consecutive pipes of the same color, you earn a significantly higher score bonus. This adds a layer of strategy to the chaos, encouraging you to aim carefully rather than just shooting randomly.

When you clear enough targets or achieve certain milestones, the game transitions into a bonus round. In this special phase, you face a walking bear and are given unlimited ammunition. This is your chance to rack up points without the stress of managing your ammo count or worrying about the bullet-eating ducks.

The maximum bullet supply you can hold is 40, so collecting extra ammo efficiently is key to surviving longer rounds. The game supports both single-player and two-player modes, allowing you to challenge a friend to see who can last longer or score higher.

Carnival remains a memorable title because of its clever twist on the standard shooting gallery formula. The threat of losing your bullets to ducks creates constant tension, making every shot count. It is a game that rewards quick reflexes and smart resource management. You can also try more Atari 2600 games from the same system.
