Defend the Orbit Against the Cosmic Creeps
Jump into the orbit of Cosmic Creeps on Atari 2600. Pilot your Orbinaut and defend the station from Space Skeeters in this two-phase shooter.
The first phase is all about survival and navigation. You must move your character upward while dodging red plasma bursts and avoiding Space Skeeters that swarm around you. The tension builds as you climb, because there is a large orange circle representing the planet's orbit that slowly sinks over time. If you make too many mistakes or take too long, this orbit decays completely, and the game ends before you even reach the station.
Once you successfully navigate from the bottom to the top of the screen, the game shifts gears. You are now in control of the space station itself. Your mission changes from climbing to defending. Cosmic Creeps will attack your position, and you must shoot them down to protect your base. However, there is a catch: Cosmic Kids are also moving across the screen, and you need to rescue them.
This second phase tests your precision. You have to shoot the Creeps without harming the Kid. Each saved Cosmic Kid is worth 1,500 points, while each defeated Cosmic Creep earns you 100 points. The orange orbit continues to decay during this phase as well, adding a constant pressure to your actions. If the orbit disappears entirely, your mission fails.
To advance to the next planet, you must score 5,000 points. This means you need to balance aggression with caution. You cannot just blast everything in sight; you have to watch for the Cosmic Kids and ensure they are not hit by your shots or the Creeps. The difficulty is inherent in the mechanics rather than any switch settings, making every level a test of patience and accuracy.
The game features a unique visual style that captures the chaotic energy of space combat. The box art famously depicts a man in a space suit towing children on a rope while being shot at by aliens, which perfectly summarizes the frantic nature of the gameplay. You are constantly managing multiple threats: the sinking orbit, the attacking Creeps, and the vulnerable Kids.
Playing Cosmic Creeps is a rewarding challenge for fans of classic shooters. The two-phase structure keeps the experience fresh, forcing you to switch from an agile climber to a defensive gunner. It is not just about shooting; it is about timing your movements and shots to survive the deteriorating orbit.
If you enjoy games that require careful planning under pressure, this title offers a solid test of skill. The goal is clear: save the kids, defeat the creeps, and keep the orbit alive long enough to hit the target score. It is a classic example of early 1980s arcade-style action translated to the home console.
