Defend the Water in Deadly Duck

Step into the role of a brave duck armed with a bill-gun and dive into the action of Deadly Duck. This is a fast-paced fixed shooter where your main goal is to protect the water from incoming threats. You stay at the bottom of the screen, moving left and right, while shooting unlimited bullets straight up to take down enemies before they reach you.

The gameplay is intense and requires quick reflexes. Two main types of enemies will try to stop you. First, there are crabs that throw bricks down toward your position. These bricks are not just obstacles; they float on the water surface and can block your path. If a brick lands under you, it impedes your horizontal movement, making it hard to dodge other attacks. You need to shoot these crabs quickly before they drop too many bricks.

The second threat comes from dragonflies flying above. These creatures cannot be destroyed permanently, but you can shoot them for points. However, shooting a dragonfly makes it angry, causing it to drop bombs that fall straight down. This adds a layer of strategy because you have to balance the need for points with the risk of getting hit by a bomb. The game features four levels of increasing difficulty, indicated by the number of dragonflies present. As you progress, you will face more dragonflies, making the screen much more chaotic and dangerous.

Scoring is an important part of the experience. Crabs are worth 30 points each. Bricks dropped by crabs can give you between 50 to 500 points depending on the level, so try to shoot them if you can avoid the chaos. Dragonflies are worth 10 points when shot. To gain a bonus life, you must eliminate all eight crabs in a level. This encourages you to clear the screen thoroughly rather than just surviving.

Players start with four lives. The challenge comes from managing the bricks on the water and the bombs from the sky simultaneously. You need to watch out for bricks blocking your movement while aiming at the crabs and dragonflies above. The progressive difficulty ensures that later levels feel significantly more demanding as more dragonflies join the fray.

This game was designed by Ed Hodapp for Sirius Software and published by Fox Video Games. It captures the classic arcade feel of early 1980s shooters with its simple controls and high-stakes gameplay. The visual style is bright and engaging, with clear animations for the duck's bill-gun and the enemies' attacks.

Whether you are looking for a quick challenge or want to test your aim, Deadly Duck offers a fun and nostalgic experience. The combination of shooting crabs, avoiding floating bricks, and managing angry dragonflies creates a unique gameplay loop that keeps you engaged. Try to get the highest score by eliminating all enemies in each level and earning those bonus lives. You can also try more Atari 2600 games from the same system.
