Guide Your Frogs Home

Step into the role of a brave frog in this timeless arcade classic adapted for the Atari 2600. Your mission is straightforward but requires sharp reflexes and careful planning: guide your frogs from the bottom of the screen to the five empty homes waiting at the top. It is a test of patience and precision that has entertained players for decades.

The journey begins on a busy highway. You must time your jumps perfectly to avoid being run over by speeding race cars, dune buggies, trucks, and bulldozers. The road is unforgiving; one wrong move means losing a frog. Once you clear the traffic, you face the river crossing. Here, you cannot swim. Instead, you must hop onto floating logs and turtles to carry you across the water.

While riding these floating platforms, you must watch out for hidden dangers in the water. Snakes, otters, and alligator jaws lurk beneath the surface, ready to snatch your frog if you are not quick enough. The river section is particularly tricky because the logs and turtles move at different speeds. If you fall off a log or get caught by a creature, it is game over for that frog.

One unique feature of this Atari 2600 version is the ability to wrap around the screen edges safely. If you jump off the left side of the screen, you will reappear on the right, and vice versa. This mechanic adds a layer of strategy not found in the original arcade version, allowing for creative shortcuts across both the road and the river.

The game supports both single-player and two-player alternating modes, making it a great choice for playing with a friend. Take turns guiding your frogs, trying to beat each other's scores. The soundtrack features a two-part harmony that is surprisingly in tune, adding a cheerful rhythm to the tense gameplay.

As you progress, the difficulty increases. The vehicles speed up, and the logs move faster, requiring quicker reactions. Keep an eye on your remaining lives and plan your route carefully. Sometimes it is better to wait for a gap in traffic or a stable log than to rush and make a mistake.
